How to Prepare for a Blood Test

Accurate blood test results depend on proper preparation before the sample is taken.

For tests like fasting glucose and lipid panel, 8–12 hours of fasting is usually required — water only, no tea, coffee, juice or gum.

  • Tell the lab about any medication or supplements you take.
  • Mention if you are or might be pregnant.
  • Mention recent illness, high stress, or poor sleep — these can affect some values.
  • Stay hydrated, avoid intense exercise for 24 hours before, and go early in the morning if possible.

This is general guidance — always follow the exact fasting instructions from your doctor or lab requisition.
