High Blood Pressure: Hidden Symptoms, New 2025 Numbers, Real Causes and Natural and Medical Ways to Control It
High blood pressure
Damages artery walls and multiplies the risk of stroke
Optimal blood pressure
Below 120/80 mmHg
The number one silent killer — often no symptoms until a stroke or kidney failure
High blood pressure (hypertension) is the most common controllable risk factor for cardiovascular disease worldwide. According to the 2025 American Heart Association (AHA/ACC) guideline, the treatment target for most adults is below 130/80 mmHg. Many people remain unaware of their high blood pressure for years.
Vital note:
Over time, high blood pressure damages the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes. The sooner it is controlled, the lower the risk of permanent damage. If you have not measured your blood pressure for a while, start today.
Blood pressure categories according to the 2025 AHA/ACC guideline
Below 120/80
Normal
120–129 / below 80
Elevated
130–139 or 80–89
Stage 1
140 or higher / 90 or higher
Stage 2
Treatment target for most adults: below 130/80.
Symptoms of high blood pressure
In most cases there are no symptoms. That is why it is called the "silent killer".
- Morning headaches or headaches at the back of the head
- Dizziness or blurred vision
- Shortness of breath or palpitations
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Unusual fatigue
Real symptoms usually appear once organ damage has begun: chest pain, signs of stroke or reduced kidney function.
Causes and risk factors
- A diet high in salt and low in potassium
- Overweight and abdominal obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Chronic stress
- Alcohol use and smoking
- Genetics and family history
- Age, menopause, diabetes, kidney disease
- Certain medications (anti-inflammatories, contraceptive pills, etc.)
How do we control blood pressure?
1. Lifestyle changes (the first and most important step)
- DASH diet: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, less salt
- Cut salt to below 2300 mg per day (ideally 1500 mg)
- Increase potassium through bananas, potatoes and leafy greens (if kidneys are healthy)
- At least 150 minutes of aerobic + resistance exercise per week
- Lose weight (even 5–10 percent is very effective)
- Manage stress (meditation, deep breathing, yoga)
- Quit smoking and limit alcohol
- Get enough good-quality sleep
2. Medication
- ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
- Calcium channel blockers
- Thiazide diuretics
- In stage 2, two drugs (preferably in one combination pill) are usually started from the beginning
The decision to start medication is based on blood pressure level, 10-year cardiovascular risk and your doctor's opinion. At pressures ≥140/90, medication plus lifestyle is almost always needed.
When should we check blood pressure?
- All adults: at least every 1–2 years
- People with borderline blood pressure or high risk: several times a year or as your doctor advises
- Home measurement with a validated device is highly recommended
